Working with the Education Sector

Effective partnerships between the health and education sectors are important to successful health promotion interventions in schools.

In NSW, there are three organisations that comprise the education sector:

To work effectively with schools, it is important to understand how each of these organisations work, how decisions are made and the most effective approach for the health promotion intervention. As part of the planning process, it is useful to speak to the education sector to assist with decision-making on format, approach and methodology, to ensure the most effective health promotion product and outcome.

For conducting any research and program evaluation at government schools or with school students, a proposal must be accepted by the DET's Ethics Committee.

Partnerships between health and education occur at different levels of the sector, State-level and District /Area Health Service level:

  • Strategic Reference Group, including State level representatives from NSW Health, DET, CEC and AIS, meets quarterly
  • Steering Committees - many Area Health Services have a formal meeting for District and Diocesan level Education representatives
