Frequently asked questions

Q. How do I find out what is being done in NSW schools on nutrition/ mental health/ sexual health/ Aboriginal health etc?

A. See our case studies or send an email to the health-schools list serv at email address: health-e-schools@lists.health.nsw.gov.au. See details on how to subscribe to the list.

Q. What is best practice health promotion with schools?

A. The health promotion framework provides best practice health activities in schools. It is based around an integrated approach to health in schools in three key areas; the formal curriculum, school ethos and environment and the involvement of parents and the community.

Q. How do we build sustainable health promoting programs in schools?

A. By developing an integrated approach based on best practice, ensuring adequate resources and skills are available and to develop policies and structures that embed the fundamentals of a health promoting school within the system. For example a sun protection program would include a 'no hat play in the shade' policy, adequate covered outdoor learning areas and trees, inclusion of aspects of skin cancer and sun protection in the curriculum and children bringing sun screen from home for regular application.
