This links page lists a range of information sources on many of the hazards and issues raised in the DIY Safe campaign. Annotations are provide to assist you to access the information you need. The list is not exhaustive.

Building, design and sustainability


  • Archicentre is the building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. It provides information and advice on the design of home renovations, a home inspection company and a leading authority on building construction. This site is an on-line resource centre for buying, building and renovating information.

  • The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR) drives, coordinates and streamlines land-use and transport planning, infrastructure development and natural resource management in New South Wales.

  • BASIX is a web-based planning tool that measures the potential performance of new residential dwellings against sustainability indices. BASIX ensures each dwelling design meets the NSW Government's targets of 40% reduction in water consumption and 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, compared with the average home. The greenhouse target will increase to 40% from July 2006. Each development application for a residential dwelling must be submitted with a BASIX Certificate.

  • This department promotes the sustainable, safe, reliable and affordable supply and use of energy and urban water in NSW. The site has some handy information for home owners, builders and renovators.

  • This site provides a booklet of information about designing and building a child safe home.

  • This booklet provides householders, homeowners and renovators with balanced information and health advice about air pollutants that may be found inside the home.

  • The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH) develops and implements national policy, programs and legislation to protect and conserve Australia's natural environment and cultural heritage. The web link provides specific information about air quality in the home, identifying potential hazards and providing research information and fact sheets.

Lead


  • NSW Department of Environment & Conservation's Lead home page contains a number of resources on living and working with lead including a comprehensive guide for renovators, what lead does to your health, sources of lead in the environment and other lead safe material.

  • Information on lead risks for your family. Also available in 15 community languages.

  • This site provides a range of factsheets on lead, including lead in pottery, in marine paints, in stained glass.



  • Aims to eliminate lead poisoning, protect the environment from lead and to strengthen networks of stakeholders to solve lead problems.

Asbestos

  • NSW Health - Asbestos and Health Risks - factsheet


  • WorkCover NSW has produced information to assist the public recognise the dangers of asbestos in products commonly found in the community.


  • This site provides information to home owners about the risks associated with asbestos, a guide for home renovators, builders and tradespeople.

  • Information for those working with brakes, clutches and other repairs ro cars/trucks in the home.

  • This booklet has been developed for people intending to work with or remove asbestos from their home, shed or fence; or carry out maintenance on car brakes, clutches and gaskets at home.

  • Site provides information on the relationship between exposure to asbestos and cancer, including information on mesothelioma.

  • Commonwealth government website of the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission. This website provides information and links to further advice and expertise relating occupational health and safety. The site has considerable references for asbestos handling, commonwealth legislation, codes of practice and guidelines for removal.

  • ADFA addresses the needs and interests of men and women affected by an asbestos related disease. The Foundation aims to provide the wider community with information about the hazards of asbestos exposure.

  • This site provides information on asbestos, its risk and to initiate programs to reduce asbestos diseases in Australia.

  • AISS provides support and information to victims and their families and carers of asbestos related disease.

  • This website explains the steps you will need to take to find out whether you have contracted a dust disease as a result of your employment as a deemed worker in New South Wales and whether you are entitled to compensation.
