Murray River Encephalitis

Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE)

Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a virus. Only a small proportion of people who are infected will have symptoms, but in a small number it can be fatal. Infection is prevented by avoiding mosquito bites.

Notification

Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) is a notifiable disease in NSW and must be reported by phone as soon as possible after diagnosis.
 
Doctors, Hospitals and laboratories must notify the local Public Health Unit (PHU).
 
Select your local PHU  to obtain the correct notification form and notify your local PHU.
