Pandemic Influenza

Pandemic Influenza

A large-scale, worldwide human epidemic of disease is called a pandemic. The development of a new influenza virus that spreads easily between people could result in an influenza pandemic. Experts are concerned that the recent H5N1 outbreak of influenza in birds could mutate to produce a new strain of influenza virus that is easily spread among humans. This is what would be needed for the development of an influenza pandemic.
