Public Oral Health Directions 2008

Summary

NSW has a long history in the promotion of oral health.
Water fluoridation is an effective, inexpensive and socially equal way to reduce tooth decay and NSW Health has a continued commitment to ensuring that all people in NSW have access to fluoride to help protect teeth against decay.

Recent State and Federal Government plans and strategies have set a vision for NSW and Australia, which includes setting priorities for improving access to oral health services and programs and improving oral health outcomes for communities.

The Centre for Oral Health Strategy (COHS) NSW has an important role to play in the promotion of oral health and in ensuring equity in access to oral health services and programs.

We hope that this publication articulates the role of COHS in monitoring State oral health outcomes and issues, contributing to the development of an appropriate oral health workforce, promoting evidence-based prevention and early intervention and health promotion programs and creating sustainable partnerships across all sectors underscores the COHS commitment to a population health approach to oral health in NSW.
