Quality & Safety

About us

The Quality & Safety Branch is part of the NSW Department of Health's Health System Performance Division. The Division comprises three other Branches: Strategic Information Management, Performance Analysis and Monitoring, and Health Service Performance Improvement. The focus of the Division is on clinical quality and safety, performance improvement, and governance. Auditing is a key interface with Area Health Services, Statutory Corporations and the Clinical Excellence Commission.

Dr Tony O'Connell is the Deputy Director-General, Health System Performance.

Kelvin Genn is the Director, Quality and Safety.

Responsibility

The Quality & Safety Branch is responsible for:

  • setting standards for Area Health Service quality systems
  • developing policies on quality and safety for statewide implementation
  • developing and reporting on system wide quality indicators
  • monitoring and analysing serious clinical incidents, and taking appropriate action such as advice and warnings to the health system
  • overseeing statewide clinical governance issues
  • overseeing consistent implementation of the NSW Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Program.
