Overview

See South Eastern Sydney Illawarra's November 2006 Newsletter for an excellent definition of Knowledge Management in action.

In 2003, a Steering Committee was established to develop and implement a knowledge management strategy in collaboration with the Centre for Clinical Governance Research (CCGR) at the UNSW to support knowledge sharing across Area Health Services and to disseminate lessons learned.

The aim of the strategy is to:

  • enhance the capacity of the Quality and Safety Branch to develop, capture and share knowledge to the NSW Health system
  • reflect knowledge management externally throughout the health system
  • ensure that evaluation and publication of work in the Quality and Safety Branch is reported and published.

Initiatives under the strategy included the Evaluation of the Safety Improvement Program (SIP) and Evaluation of the Incident Information Management System (IIMS) in NSW, development of a Lessons Learned in Quality and Safety website (Intranet), safety notifications. Other activities include the distribution of information from other jurisdictions, immediate responses to reportable incident briefs, the establishment of communities of practice and cumulative knowledge learned from root cause analysis processes.
