The Quality & Safety Branch is developing a medication
safety strategy with the assistance of the medication
safety strategy steering committee.
The objectives of the strategy are:
- Incident monitoring / risk assessment
- Delivering medication alerts via the Safety Alert
Broadcasting System (SABS)
- Overseeing the implementation of the National Inpatient
Medication Chart (NIMC)
- Maintaining the safety aspects of medication handling
policies and guidelines
Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alert 41 - Preventing errors relating to commonly used anticoagulants
The Joint Commission has released an alert highlighting the problems associated with the use of anticoagulant medications.
This is in line with a similar alert published by the National Patient Safety Agency.
This alert contains useful information about preventing errors with anticoagulant medications.
Facilities are encouraged to analyse their systems relating to anticoagulant use using the Medication Safety Self Assessment for Antithrombotic Therapy in Australian Hospitals.
