Managing Pain for Adults with Spinal Cord Injuries

Summary

Pain is a common complication after spinal cord injury, which can significantly impact upon a person's functional ability and independence, psychological well-being, ability to return to work and quality of life.
Studies indicate that around two-thirds of people with spinal cord injury suffer from chronic pain with one third of these people reporting severe pain. Like other types of chronic pain, pain following SCI is best considered within a biopsychosocial framework.

This document describes a multidimensional approach to the assessment and diagnosis of pain following spinal cord injury, and discusses pain management options.
