Corporate Governance & Accountability Compendium for NSW Health

Summary

This compendium describes the elements of the structures and processes which govern the provision of health servicesby the agencies that are collectively known as 'NSW Health'. This compendium sets out the roles, relationships and accountabilities of the agencies that constitute the public healthsystem in NSW. It reflects the statutory allocation of functions between the Minister for Health, the NSW Departmentof Health, the Health Administration Corporation, Area Health Services, Statutory Health Corporations, Affiliated HealthOrganisations and the Ambulance Service. Throughout this compendium there is an emphasis on achieving good governance of the public health system, on planning and delivery of health services, on managing performance, and on the practice of risk management. Significant changes to the governance of the NSW Health system began in 2004 with the abolition of area healthboards. There is now a direct line of accountability to the Director-General of Health for health service executives. These arrangements are also described in this compendium.
