Making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle has
many benefits:
- Feeling better - being active can give you more energy,
improve your sleep, and add fun to your day
- Enjoying better health - being active can help control
weight, and reduce the risk of high blood
pressure, diabetes, heart
disease, some cancers, stroke
and osteoporosis (bone loss)
- Having a healthier state of mind - being active can lower
stress, help concentration and self-confidence
Nearly half of the adults in NSW are not doing enough physical
activity to benefit their health.
What can I do to improve my physical activity levels?
Medical experts recommend 30 minutes of moderate physical
activity on most days of the week. Moderate activities include
walking, swimming, dancing, gardening and playing golf. These
activities will increase your heart rate but not necessarily
make you puff.
If you cannot fit 30 minute sessions into your lifestyle,
health benefits can still be gained from periods of activity
as brief as 10 minutes, if these add up to 30 minutes in total
on most days. Even small things like taking the stairs instead
of the lift can help make you more active.
There are additional health benefits from doing vigorous
activities such as jogging and aerobics but these activities
are not for everyone. Some regular physical activity is much
better than none.
'Active Australia' is a campaign to encourage Australians
of all ages to become more active. The key message is: Exercise
– you only have to take it REGULARLY, not seriously.
