March 2023 edition

Across Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, we are using our Strategic Plan to put Future Health into practice. Value based healthcare is an essential part of our approach to deliver on our strategic priorities and serve the changing needs of the community.

This edition highlights how value based healthcare is supporting us all to achieve the Future Health objectives and how your work today is setting us up for the future.

We have a diverse geography with people living in rural, remote and concentrated suburban areas across the Penrith, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Lithgow local government areas – almost 9,179 km2.

Our more than 7,000 staff serve a strong, vibrant multicultural community and people of all ages.

We are dedicated to providing them with exceptional patient care that remains responsive to their needs.

Value based healthcare helps us to respond to these changing needs in a sustainable way. An essential part of Future Health, it allows us to continuously improve how we deliver effective care, and better outcomes and experiences.

Future Health: focusing on local perspectives

I was pleased Nepean Blue Mountains local health district was invited to present at the opening session for NSW Health staff of the Value based healthcare event series on Tuesday 14 February.

On behalf of our health district Vanessa Clements, Director of the Planning, Redevelopment and Strategic Office and Deputy Director Thea Thomas provided a local perspective on the role of VBHC and Future Health in our strategic planning. You can read more about this in the feature article of this edition, which highlights how Future Health is informing our local strategic planning processes and supporting us to achieve our common vision with NSW Health.

Recognising and building on achievements

It was important to review our existing plan and identify our achievements so we could continue work that was positively contributing to patient and staff experiences and health outcomes. Two great examples are Koori Kids Futures and the Emergency Department Patient Experience pilot.

Koori Kids Futures offers work experience to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10 to 12 of local high schools. Some of the previous participants are now working for the District, while others are studying for health professions. The program is having a lasting impact on these students, as well as the experience of patients who receive care within our District.

The Emergency Department Patient Experience pilot at Nepean Hospital provided much needed support to patients, their families and carers when they are in the Emergency Department (ED). With a focus on improving the wellbeing and comfort of people in the ED, the project included having patient experience officers in the waiting room who take a proactive approach with patients and visitors. The pilot program is now permanently embedded into Nepean Hospital’s ED and continues to provide some comfort and support in what can be a very difficult experience.
