The NSW Public Health Workforce Plan 2024-2034 provides strategic direction for the public health workforce in NSW.
Over horizon one, the Plan focuses particularly on health protection and provides direction for the workforce to be equipped to protect the public from infectious and environmental threats. The Plan centres on our workforce growing enhanced skills to identify and assess potential risks, analyse and interpret data, develop and implement prevention and control measures, work across government, and to engage with, listen and respond to communities.
The Plan sets a vision for a multidisciplinary public health workforce that is integrated within the NSW health system, agile, valued and responsive to the evolving public health needs of NSW communities. It builds on the achievements of NSW Health's response to COVID-19 and positions the NSW public health system to meet future public health community needs and threats.
The Plan was informed by an extensive consultation process involving NSW Health staff and external stakeholders. This consultation highlighted the changing landscape of public health and key challenges experienced in NSW. Consultation informed development of key public health principles to guide the NSW public health workforce and reinforce a holistic and equity-based approach to community wellbeing.
Implementation for horizon one of the Plan is being led by Health Protection NSW.
