Neuropsychological assessment

Adahps' psychologist provides neuropsychological assessment and assistance with a definitive diagnosis.

To be eligible an individual must:

  • be a resident of NSW
  • be HIV+
  • have suspected cognitive impairment.

Case management

Using a collaborative approach to case management Adahps case managers provide support to individuals across NSW. The level of support differs according to the resources available to the individual (eg a HIV outreach team or case manager) and the level of support required.

To be eligible for case management an individual must:

  • be HIV+
  • be a NSW resident
  • have suspected or confirmed HIV Associated Dementia (HAD)
  • have signs of cognitive/behavioural impairments related to HIV brain conditions such as PML, Cerebral Toxoplasmosis
  • HIV related cognitive impairment with one or more medical or psychosocial issues.

Brokerage: In-home and community support

Adahps can fund care workers to: facilitate treatment, medication adherence and retention in care; compliment a rehabilitation process; assist people to live independently; or to provide respite for carers.

To be eligible an individual must:

  • be a client of Adahps (meeting the case management eligiblity criteria)
  • have a high level of dependency or disability
  • the primary need for support needs to be related to the HIV.

HIV Alcohol and Other Drugs Integrated Care Program

Accommodation and support for people who are homeless and have HIV, alcohol and other drug issues and another complex issue. Clients are collaboratively case managed by workers within the Haymarket Foundation Stabilisation Unit, Adahps, HIV community teams and the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation. Adahps manages referral into the program.

To be eligible an individual must:

  • be HIV+
  • be homeless
  • have a current alcohol and or other drug addiction and a complex need e.g. mental illness

NSW HIV Supported Accommodation Program

Provides temporary and affordable housing for people with HIV who are unable to live independently.

To be eligible an individual must:

  • be a resident of NSW
  • be HIV+
  • have a cognitive or physical impairment which prevents independent living,or have multiple needs directly related to the HIV which prevents independent living.

Dame Eadith Walker House (Yaralla)

A high dependency residential care facility for people across NSW with HIV-associated dementia (HAD), progressive multifocal leuko encephalopathy (PML) and related conditions. 'Yaralla' is located in Dame Eadith Walker House in Concord.

Referrals are managed through the Supported Accommodaiton Program.

To be eligible an individual must

  • be a resident of NSW
  • be diagnosed with: HIV associated dementia, or HIV associated neurocognitive disorder and mental illness, or HIV associated neurocognitive disorder with PML, cerebral toxoplasmosis and similar brain related impairments.

Persons in Custody HIV Referral Project

This joint initiative between Adahps and Justice Health connects inmates who are HIV+ to an appropriate service in the area where they will be living on release.

To be eligible an individual must be:

  • HIV+
  • due to be released from a NSW gaol

Other support

  • Specialist medical assessment from, but not limited to: the HIV Neurologist and Neuropsychologist at St Vincent’s Hospital and the HIV Liaison Psychiatry and Immunology Departments at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
  • Secondary needle and syringe program.
  • Peer support and education - such as education and training, assistance developing and implementing a treatment, care or support plan. The team has expertise in: psychiatric nursing, alcohol and other drugs, clinical and neuropsychology, social work and counselling, suppported accommodation and working with individuals with complex and challenging medical and social needs.
