Continuation of suspension of term two rotation

Dear Colleagues

Thank you for your ongoing efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and commitment to providing high quality care to the NSW community.

The Ministry of Health, in consultation with local health districts and specialty networks, has reviewed options on how to proceed with term two rotations including if they could proceed with some delay. Following consultation we have agreed to continue with the suspension of term two rotations to minimise disruption and to consolidate the response to COVID-19.

We acknowledge the suspension of term two rotations has been disruptive for junior doctors. However, the decision has been taken as part of the COVID-19 workforce response to ensure the system is in the best place to respond.  The suspension has required significant work by JMO Managers, Directors of Training and Education Support Officers to redo rosters impacted by the suspension.

The pandemic COVID-19 environment is rapidly changing. It is pleasing that the measures taken by the system have resulted in a fall in the number of new COVID-19 cases in NSW and that our hospitals continue to operate effectively and we have not been overwhelmed as has occurred in many overseas countries.

What if staying in my current rotation doesn’t work for me?

We appreciate that there may be circumstances such as, including but not limited to, carer responsibilities, specific training requirements, being on a relief term, that make it difficult for you to remain in your current rotation.

Rotations can be considered for trainees on a case-by-case basis by your current facility or training network. Where one trainee needs to be rotated this will usually require other trainees to also then rotate to ensure all terms and positions remain filled.

What about term three rotations?

Based on the current advice on the progress of COVID-19, it is proposed that term three rotations will occur as planned. If there is a change in circumstances we will provide notice as early as possible of any alternate arrangements.

Junior doctors on five term rotations will change on 29 June 2020.

Junior doctors on four term rotations and six-month rotations will change on 3 August 2020.

If you would like to discuss your rotation please contact your JMO manager or training director.

Best wishes
