Maternity care in NSW

NSW Health’s vision for maternity care in NSW

‘…that all women in NSW receive respectful, evidence-based and equitable maternity care that improves their experiences and health and wellbeing outcomes’.

Shaping the future of maternity care

We are developing a future-focused Statewide Maternity Services Plan (the Plan) to guide the delivery of maternity services across NSW over the next five to ten years.

The Plan recognises that maternity services must continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the women and families of NSW, our communities, clinicians and staff.

The Plan builds on previous maternity reform activities, including Connecting, Listening and Responding: A Blueprint for Action – Maternity Care in NSW and the implementation of Birth Trauma Inquiry recommendations.

While the Plan is being developed, we continue work to improve maternity care, focusing on:

  • increasing access to maternity continuity of care models, including midwifery continuity of care
  • strengthening the provision of respectful, evidence-based and equitable maternity care
  • enhancing care for Aboriginal women and families
  • improving the way information is provided to women and families
  • supporting women who experience pregnancy complications
  • protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding
  • supporting women and families who have complex care needs.
