The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit, educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in depression and bipolar disorder.

The Institute is attached to the Prince of Wales Hospital and affiliated with the University of New South Wales.

Launched in February 2002, The Institute's mission is to advance the understanding, diagnosis and management of the mood disorders by continuously raising clinical, research, education and training standards. The Institute aims to improve the lives of those affected - and in turn - the lives of their families and friends.

The Institute’s organisational model has four key inter-dependent functions, as follows:

  • Research: to support and advance research into mood disorders
  • Clinical services: to raise clinical standards of diagnosing and managing mood disorders
  • Education: to provide expert education and training about mood disorders to Healthcare Professionals
  • Community Support: to provide the community with expert information and education about mood disorders.
