Summary

Long Bay Hospital has a central role in the care of patients presenting with suicide risk. Good therapeutic relationships with patients and where possible, their families, are key components for the reduction of suicide risk. Admission to Long Bay Hospital provides the opportunity for a safe and containing environment, supervision commensurate with the degree of risk, direct observation, regular monitoring of mental state and continuous therapeutic support. Long Bay Hospital aims for an appropriate balance between the need to control the person at risk within a safe and containing environment and the need to promote autonomy through therapeutic relationships and an empowering milieu.

These suicide risk assessment and management protocols are to be read in conjunction with the Framework for Suicide Risk Assessment and Management for NSW Health Staff.
