Video: Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer’s Message to NSW Health Midwives

Registered Midwife: I love being able to provide women-centred care. It's such a rewarding part of every family's life.

Jacqui Cross, Chief Nursing & Midwifery Officer, NSW Health: Today is international day of the midwife, and it's being celebrated all over the world. It's a day where we can reflect on the unique contributions that our midwives make for women and their families, and it's also a day where all of you can reflect on your own contributions and the contributions of your colleagues around you.

There's no doubt that our midwives have passion in abundance. And that's what makes them so good at what they do.

Giving women the support that they need to bring new life into the world, and to families coming together at such a wonderful time in their lives.

Every year in New South Wales midwives help bring around 95,000 new babies into the world. I can't think of a better job.

Midwife: How do you think that went

Woman: Yeah, good. It was pretty intense in the moment but so thankful for everyone, and now we have this bundle of joy.

Jacqui Cross: And what a great opportunity to engage with women, so they can provide the best possible start to those babies as they grow into childhood.

Midwife: I'm from Singleton and that's a small rural hospital and I quite like the rural aspect of midwifery.

Jacqui Cross: Well, congratulations. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

If you know a midwife, show your appreciation by wearing one of our purple and blue hearts. Let them know about how you see them as being passionate about what they do. Their professionalism, and the real difference that they make to the care that they provide.

I'm also excited to announce that nominations for the 2021 Excellence in Nursing & Midwifery Awards are now open until the end of June. So today is a good opportunity to think about a midwife that you'd like to nominate for an award. So, I'd invite you to look on the NSW Health website and go into the nomination portal so you can nominate a midwife that you think has made a real difference.

This is truly a day for you to celebrate the difference that you make to families and to women. Thank you.
