In the Lead is a 12-month program for nursing/midwifery managers who wants to expand their leadership skills and capabilities specific to the complexities of healthcare.

Eligibility

Nurse/Midwifery Managers with at least 1 year experience in the role who is willing to:

  • grow, adapt and thrive as leaders
  • apply learning and make progress on an identified work-related improvement project
  • participate in and attend the components of the program.

Structure

Virtual orientation

During the virtual orientation, participants can expect a comprehensive Welcome Session, where they will be greeted and familiarised with the program's key aspects. The Introduction to the Program will provide an overview of the curriculum, objectives, and potential opportunities. A significant focus of the orientation will be on Building Connections within the cohort group, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment for participants to engage and network with one another.

Self-paced preparation

To maximise the face-to-face workshop time, self-paced preparation leverages the use of self-reflection to provide participants with a series of focused preparation tasks. Tasks might include reading a short article, watching an informative video, or identifying a workplace challenge or personal improvement goal.

Strengths profile / coaching

Strength's assessments help participants identify their unique talents and abilities. By understanding their strengths, participants can leverage these qualities to become more effective. Strengths start a development program on a positive platform as opposed to a deficit approach. This fosters engagement and investment in the program.

Face-to-face workshops

The in-person workshops will build on the self-paced preparation and allow participants to engage with the critical elements of the curriculum in an engaging, practical, and experiential way. A range of modalities will be integrated into delivering content, including relevant case studies (taken from the Success Profile), using the group, small group work, and liberating structures.

Learning application

Critical to the learning cycle is the application of learning to the workplace. This component emphasises the N/M Managers role as enablers of a workplace culture that provides compassionate, safe, and quality care.

Webinars

Webinars are a way to add content or topics to the program in response to what might emerge during the program and ensure accessibility and flexibility of learning. The program will use the webinar to facilitate reflection, enable group coaching or bring in guest speakers. Guest speakers who are exemplars from the field set the standard, provide subject matter expertise and demonstrate leadership in the real world.

Evaluation

An evaluation of program outcomes is a critical part of the program design. The evaluation would be undertaken before the commencement of the program to establish baseline data and at the conclusion to provide a comparative position to measure progress towards outcomes. Additional evaluations will be collected at key agreed points in the program to ensure 'just in time' participant feedback is incorporated into the design and delivery of the program and that participants evolving learning needs are being met.
