Transcript of: International Day of the Midwife 2022

Midwife: I'm feeling the back over here and I can kind of feel a little bottom because the whole back moves when I do.

Jacqui Cross, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, NSW Health: I think midwives love what they do and that they really want to make a difference and they have a real focus on the woman and bringing that new life into the world, in the best possible way.

Midwife: So how have you been feeling? Have there been any contractions?

Woman:Yeah. They've been more intense too.

Midwife: More intense, yeah?

Jacqui Cross, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, NSW Health: Our midwives, being there in the COVID response supporting women and their families under some really challenging times and they've done a remarkable job in doing that. COVID's been an interesting time for all of us and I think we've drawn on the things that bring us to work every day. They're there to support the woman and that's what they've done and they'll do it, no matter the circumstances.

Midwife: When we put one of these on, we're having a look at how baby's actually going inside your belly, at the time. The baby's not stressed. It's happy. It's got enough blood flowing through the placenta and it's going really well.

Jacqui Cross, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, NSW Health: International Day of the Midwife, is especially for our midwives and it's a great day for people to reflect on the year that's been, think about the things that you've learned, the achievements that you've made and reflect on the difference that you are making to the people of New South Wales.
