General paediatrics presentations out of scope

​​​Public outpatient services in NSW are generally not provided to patients presenting with these conditions.

Paediatric patients (aged 0 to 15 years)

Presenting conditionOut of scope (not routinely provided) criteria
Abdominal pain (general paediatrics)
  • Abdominal pain with a gynaecological cause
  • Constipation without trial of medical treatment
Growth and nutritional concerns
  • Iron deficient anaemia in a child aged > 2 years without
    oral iron supplementation for a minimum of 12 weeks (or if oral iron supplementation has not been tolerated) or suspicion of underlying illness or other cause for concern
Learning, developmental and behavioural difficultiesThe following formal diagnostic assessments are not routinely provided:
  • Academic or specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia or reading), including cognitive assessments for intellectual capacity or disability
    Note: commonly diagnosed by a school counsellor or psychologist
  • Cognitive assessments for intellectual disability and specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia or reading)
    Note: commonly diagnosed by a school counsellor or psychologist
  • Defiance without developmental concern
    Note: refer to a local family support service
  • Extended standardised diagnostic assessments for complex neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g. ADOS)
    Note: these assessments can be performed by allied health professionals (e.g. clinical psychologists, speech pathologists and occupational therapists) independent of referral to a general paediatrician
  • Primary communication delay or disorder
    Note: commonly managed by a community speech pathologist
  • Primary mental health presentations without medical co-morbidity
    Note: commonly managed by a general practitioner, child and adolescent mental health service, school counsellor or psychologist
  • Repeat prescriptions for a child stabilised on medication(s) available through their approved General Practitioner without a new concern
Neonatal and infant concerns
  • Circumcision
  • Positional plagiocephaly (unless neck mass or signs of craniosynostosis, or not responding to physiotherapy input)
  • Tongue tie without medical concern
  • Umbilical hernia
  • Well baby follow-up
Respiratory concerns
  • Exposure to contacts with confirmed tuberculosis
  • History of asthma without first-line management
  • Recurrent upper respiratory tract viral infections
Seizures
  • Aged between 6 months and 6 years with uncomplicated febrile convulsion
Urinary tract infections
  • Aged > 6 months with a single, uncomplicated urinary tract infection (i.e. clean catch culture positive)
Non-condition specific
  • Irritability with sleep or settling and who have not had engagement with a local health service
