Guidance for Clinical Review of Congenital Syphilis and Inadequately Treated Maternal Syphilis

This guidance provides a framework for conducting a clinical case review into congenital syphilis or review of inadequately treated maternal syphilis. A clinical case review should be undertaken whenever there is either:

  1. a confirmed case of congenital syphilis or
  2. a baby born to a pregnant woman known to have untreated syphilis at the time of birth, regardless of whether the baby is diagnosed with congenital syphilis in the neonatal period.

The purpose is to support consistent reviews of clinical care including identification of all factors which contributed to the outcome, to inform system-level learnings and improvements.

The guidance is intended to be used by staff working in NSW Health facilities in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including those working in public and population health.
