Master of Clinical Education (Leadership and Management) (M Clin Med)
The Master of Clinical Education (Leadership and Management) is a joint innovation of NSW Health and the University of Newcastle. It is an experiential learning program designed to develop hospital doctors to be clinical leaders with a broad perspective on patient care and hospital management.
The program supports the hospitalist career pathway by providing advanced clinical leadership and management expertise required for Senior Hospitalist positions and a range of other roles including Department or Unit Director, Director of Prevocational Training, Quality Improvement and System Redesign, Clinical Governance, Director of Research or Education.
Figure 1: The Senior Hospitalist training pathway sits between the Specialist training pathway and the General Practitioner training pathway.
The Master of Clinical Education (Leadership and Management) is a two year part-time program, endorsed by NSW Health that commenced in 2012.
The program, or equivalent, will be a requirement for eligibility for NSW Health Senior Hospitalist positions as an alternative to the Senior Career Medical Officer Grading Committee. Completion of the Masters program offers a fast track to the senior hospitalist role, with gradutes able to apply for Senior Hospitalist positions (Senior CMO grade equivalent) after five years of postgraduate experience rather than seven.
To support eligible NSW Health doctors to participate in the Master of Clinical Education (Leadership and Management), NSW Health is providing a number of sponsorships for selected eligible candidates via the Health Education & Training Institute.
