This initiative started in 2000 to support people employed as Aboriginal Health Workers and Aboriginal Health Practitioners (as outlined in Information Bulletin IB2018_018) to collaborate and share information on career pathways, professional development opportunities and workforce initiatives across NSW. In 2018 it included a forum with the aim to hold it every two years but was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021 the Forum will be held on Mondays 9, 16, 23 and Wednesday 25 August. This timing was chosen to align with the NAATSIHWP National Recognition Day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners (7 August) and coincides with the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (9 August). It will be a wholly online event to accommodate COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions and increase access for more people to attend. A working group was formed in early 2021 who decided on an overarching theme of "Culturally Centred Care" to explore issues and opportunities facing Aboriginal staff who support the cultural responsiveness of NSW Health to engage with Aboriginal people and their family and carers.
