The wastewater surveillance program has evolved in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now used to monitor trends in COVID-19 prevalence and the presence of variants.
Following expert panel recommendations, the weekly wastewater surveillance sites have been reduced to three in Sydney (located in Bondi, Liverpool and Quakers Hill) and one in Newcastle (Burwood Beach), which are sampled on a weekly basis. Results from these sites are published in the weekly NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report.
