Transcript of Welcome to 2020 - International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

Jacqui Cross, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer: As we settle into 2020 I just wanted to touch base with you all and say a big hello. 2020 has been announced by the World Health Organization as International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and what a truly exciting time for us all. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to highlight the important work that we do. It's our year to be louder and to be proud about the amazing work that you do and the truly unique contributions that you all make to our healthcare system.

Another exciting part of 2020 is our contribution to a global program called Nursing Now. It's a really important campaign aimed at increasing the healthcare outcomes for people across the world. That's also our opportunity to showcase the unique contribution that we make as nurses to healthcare globally. Every local health district and network in New South Wales is going to be joining Nursing Now and we were using that unity to give additional support to our nurses as leaders, particularly those emerging leaders who will be firing on the back of the legacy that we're going to be leaving as we move into the next stages of our careers.

2020 is also 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale. As many of you all know Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nursing, but the absolute focus on what it is to be a professional, bringing that compassion and care that nurses are known for and also those highly technical skills that form the foundation of our profession.

I think that's something that's really worth celebrating and something to be incredibly proud of. Your expertise and your leadership are invaluable and greatly appreciated not only by patients but by your colleagues as well. I am immensely proud of the work that you do each and every day.

So let's make 2020 our year.
