Transcript for: Craig Archer Profile

Female patient: The registrar came in and we had a yarn. Yeah. And he wants to keep an eye on it.

Craig Archer: Yeah, absolutely. We can do that, yeah.

My name's Craig. I'm the Nursing Unit Manager at Grafton Base Hospital in the Surgical Ward.

Hey Mark, it's Craig, mate. Can you grab us a wheelchair for level one? Too easy. Thanks mate. See you, bye.

Jodie had a knee replacement, it's only day three today. She's had a bit of a wound breakdown.

Female patient: Keep up the good work, mate. We'll try.

Craig Archer: Yeah, absolutely. Well, say g'day to Chris for me too.

Female patient: I shall. I'll catch you later, see ya.

Craig Archer: I like it because everybody knows everybody. You walk down the hallway. You say g'day to everybody that you pass and it's nice.

I'll just check with the team, make sure they're okay and you can send them around straight away. No worries.

We are a full ward right now. We got 24 patients. We're expecting probably seven discharges. We have three on the theatre list. So, we should be sitting quite well today.

Fantastic. Thank you. Righto. Bye.

My nursing career started as an Assistant in Nursing in a nursing home up in Brisbane. From there, I worked at Redcliffe Hospital as an enrolled nurse while I studied my registration. Decided to want a bit of a tree change, so I came down to the Clarence Valley.

I didn't ever think I'd be in a leadership role, it just evolved that way. I've always taken on any challenges. So, if upper management, come and say would you like to do this? I'd say, well, I'll give it a go. And my career basically evolved from there.

I still like to be out on the ward. I still like to mingle with the staff and the patients.

You have to have that care. You are looking after people that aren't in their best spot. You know what I mean? So, you have to have that care. And the team, you've got to appreciate your colleagues because everybody brings something unique to their job. We're not all the same, but I guarantee you if we're all the same, it wouldn't function. So yeah, respect for each other.

We still have three water loads to do and just one falls. Any other concerns? Awesome. Fantastic. Thank you.

It's always been a very rewarding job and yeah, it's given me heaps of opportunities.
