A Health Professionals Workforce Taskforce was established by the Director General of Health to develop the 10 year workforce plan.  The Taskforce was chaired by Dr Anne Marie Feyer of the Georges Institute with members representing Medical, Nursing and Allied Health from both metropolitan and rural health.

Consultation commenced in October 2011 with the release of a Discussion Paper and Technical Paper. These papers formed the basis of the consultation process, which also included a roundtable of key leaders in health and education on 24 October 2011.

The Chair and representatives of the Taskforce met with a range of stakeholders as part of the consultation process. Correspondence was also sent to all Australasian Medical Colleges, local health districts and specialty health networks requesting feedback on the preliminary outcomes of the specialist workforce modelling and medical workforce priorities. Additional meetings were also held with senior representatives of the local health districts, Health Education and Training Institute, Clinical Excellence Commission and Agency for Clinical Innovation in March 2012.

The Health Professionals Workforce Plan was released on 30 September 2012.
