Tularaemia is a rare disease caused by bacteria that is usually acquired from the bite of infected ticks or deer flies, or from handling infected animals. Using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves, pants and socks and wearing gloves when handling dead animals can prevent infection in affected areas.

For further information please see Tularaemia fact sheet, or contact your local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055.
