About this guide

This guide tells you how to use the Raise It steps to get help fast in hospital.

Use the Raise It steps if you are worried yourself or someone else is getting sicker in hospital.

There are 3 steps

  • Step 1 is talk
  • Step 2 is ask
  • Step 3 is call.

This guide explains how to use these steps.

You will not get in trouble if you use these steps.

We want you to speak up.

Raise It steps

Step 1 Talk

Talk to someone if you are worried.

Tell a

  • nurse
  • midwife
  • doctor.

You can say

  • “I feel worse.”
  • “Something does not feel right.”
  • “I am worried about someone being sicker.”
  • “I am worried about my baby.”

The nurse or doctor will listen and check you or the person you are worried about.

Step 2 Ask

If you are still worried after Step 1 you can ask for more help.

You can say

  • “I am still worried and want to speak to the person in charge.”
  • “I want a Clinical Review.”

A Clinical Review is when a more senior nurse or doctor does a careful check.

The hospital staff may

  • ask more questions
  • do more checks
  • bring in more staff to help.

Step 3 Call

If you are still worried after Step 2 call the Raise It line.

The Raise It phone number is 1800 777 333.

It is free to call this number.

Have these details ready before you call 1800 777 333

  • the name of the hospital or health service you are in
  • the name of the part of the hospital you are in.

You can ask hospital staff for these details.

When you call 1800 777 333, you will hear a message.

This message is from a machine.

It will ask what hospital or health service you are calling from.

Say the name of the hospital or health service you are in.

Then you will be connected to a person who can help you.

If the machine cannot understand you it will still connect you to a person who can help you.
