Children’s Body Mass Index (BMI calculator)

The children's BMI calculator is a screening tool for health professionals to assess how a child is growing.

While it is not a perfect measure, it is helpful to identify children who may need follow-up on their growth.

A three-step brief intervention model to support clinicians

Assessing children's growth is important for providing quality care.

The three-step Ask, Advise, Help (AAH) brief intervention model can support clinicians to deliver routine growth assessments for children. It can also help to track development, identify risks, address health concerns, and ensure timely support.

Tips

  • Always practice good clinical judgement. If you think a growth assessment or conversation might be too stressful for a child or their family, it’s okay to reconsider doing it.
  • Talk in a positive and encouraging way.
  • When giving advice, be supportive and kind, without being judgmental.
