Helping more people have planned surgery sooner
The Northern Beaches Hospital (NBH) Surgical Hub is a new NSW Health service to improve access to planned (elective) surgery for public patients.
The hub opened on 1 July 2026 and provides greater access to surgery and helps reduce waiting times across NSW.
The hub is a day surgery service that:
The hub is a day-only service with plans to expand over time. Some patients may stay overnight if required.
The service is being introduced carefully to ensure safe, high-quality care as it grows over time, with referrals initially being taken for patients from public hospitals in Northern Sydney and Central Coast local health districts.
Over time, the hub will expand to include more surgery types and patients from throughout NSW.
The hub is not a service that patients can book directly or refer themselves to.
Access is based on whether your surgery is suitable and availability. Existing planned surgery waiting list rules continue to apply.
The hub is also not a replacement for your local hospital or a service for complicated or emergency surgery.
Initially the hub will focus on:
More surgeries may be added over time as the service grows.
If you are already on a public hospital waiting list:
From 1 July 2026, the hub will begin treating patients.
Over time, the hub will expand to include more patients, surgeries and referring hospitals throughout NSW.
The hub will continue to grow in stages, ensuring that services are safe, sustainable and deliver high-quality care as it grows.

No. You will remain on your current hospital's waiting list and existing rules still apply.
By electing to have your surgery at the hub, you will receive the same high-quality care and it helps you to have your surgery sooner than is possible at your current hospital.
For some patients, surgery may be offered sooner at the hub. This depends on:
Most surgery will be day-only. If required to stay overnight, this will be confirmed with you.
Follow-up care in the first 24 hours will be provided by Northern Beaches Hospital. You will then return under the care of your referring surgeon who can provide any follow-up care required.
You will be contacted prior to surgery and provided information on how to get to the hospital and support requirements.
On discharge, you will be provided with care information and contacts for any concerns which may arise.
You will receive a follow up phone call within 24 hours of your surgery.
As this is day surgery, you will need a support person to drive you home and care for you at home for 24 hours after surgery.
If you have questions, including whether you are suitable to have your surgery at the hub, please email MOH-surgery@health.nsw.gov.au.
