Eligible workers from participating services can supply naloxone medicines for free to people at risk of experiencing or witnessing an opioid overdose.

Naloxone is a Schedule 3 medicine and must be supplied in compliance with legal and regulatory controls. Eligible workers must successfully complete the NSW Take Home Naloxone training and assessment for non-government and private services to become legally credentialled to supply naloxone.

There are four steps to become credentialled to supply naloxone under the NSW Take Home Naloxone program for non-government and private service workers.

Step 1: Check that you are eligible to become a 'credentialed worker'

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

1. employed or engaged with in a participating private service or non-government organisation
2. hold a current certificate in basic life support/CPR course (e.g. Certificate in Basic Life Support (HETI Code 40101256) or Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Australian course code HLTAID001).

Step 3: Complete the knowledge assessment

After watching the training video, complete the NSW Take Home Naloxone knowledge assessment. The assessment includes 9 multiple choice questions. To pass, you must correctly answer all questions. You will be able to re-take the assessment if needed.

Step 4: Keep a copy of your certificate

Once you successfully complete the Take Home Naloxone knowledge assessment, you will receive a certificate by email. You are now credentialled to provide Take Home Naloxone brief interventions and to supply naloxone while you are employed at a participating service. Keep a copy of the certificate for your records. This credentialling is transferable between organisations so you will still be credentialled if you change jobs.
