Base of Skull Service (BOSS) Workshop

The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network

Finalist:  Health Innovation Award

In a milestone for paediatric healthcare, the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) hosted Australia’s first Endoscopic Orbital Base of Skull Service (BOSS) workshop, led by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon Dr Catherine Banks. The workshop advanced surgical expertise for the first time by simulating real life surgery required for tumours in difficult to access sites.

Specialist teams from SCHN’s ENT, neurosurgery and oculoplastic departments were joined by leading surgeons from across the world, to explore innovative techniques using virtual reality, stealth navigation systems and the latest endoscopic tools.

Using these minimally invasive methods, surgeons can now access the base of the skull through the eye and nose, reducing pain, scarring and recovery time. The workshop was the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, offering safer and faster care for children with complex tumours, rare conditions and invasive infections.
