Culture at the Heart: Reimagining Go4Fun

Mid North Coast Local Health District

Honourable Mention: Excellence in Aboriginal Healthcare Award

The Nyami Gawbarri (AG4F) adapted model was developed to address low engagement of Aboriginal families in the mainstream Go4Fun program through a culturally safe, community-led approach. In 2024, the Health Promotion team partnered with the Nyami Gawbarri Aboriginal Corporation to co-design and deliver an adapted program on Gumbaynggirr Country.

The program was developed in response to feedback from Aboriginal communities, facilitators and stakeholders who identified the need for a model that reflected local culture, strengths and ways of learning. The program combined evidence-based nutrition, responsive feeding and movement education with culturally relevant and engaging activities. These included hands-on cooking and lunchbox preparation, supermarket tours, exposure to foods, bush tucker walks, traditional activities, local language and Elders' involvement. Weight eligibility criteria and measurements were removed as mandatory to reduce stigma.

Between Term 2 in 2024 and June 2026, six programs engaged more than 105 Aboriginal children and families, with completion rates between 88% and 100%. Families reported increased confidence in food preparation, improved nutrition knowledge, greater participation in physical activity, strengthened cultural identity, and enhanced social connection.
