NSW Ambulance electronic Medical Records (eMR) Integration project

eHealth NSW

Finalist: Health Innovation Award

The NSW Ambulance eMR Integration project is transforming how patient information is shared between ambulance services and emergency departments, giving clinicians faster access to critical information when caring for patients.

The project replaces paper-based processes with a digital workflow that transfers NSW Ambulance electronic Patient Care Records (ePCRs) into hospital systems through the Ambulance Arrivals Board. This makes pre-hospital information available to support a more connected patient journey. The solution was piloted at Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH) and Young and Narrandera Health Services, with significant improvements demonstrated.

Availability of paramedic records at a patient's first clinical assessment increased from 32% to 63%, while time to locate pre-hospital information decreased from 24 minutes to less than two minutes. Staff reported easier access to information, reduced administrative burden and less risk of information being lost. During the pilot, records were electronically transmitted for 85% of ambulance presentations at POWH and up to 95% at Young and Narrandera Health Services.
