Dancing Towards Healthy Ageing

Western NSW Local Health District

Finalist: Keeping People Healthy Award

In 2024 the Western NSW Local Health District's (WNSWLHD) Health Promotion team introduced the DanceWise (seated) and DanceMoves (seated and standing) programs to rural communities of Western NSW, supporting community-based holistic healthy ageing. With the District’s population of people aged 65 years and over expected to increase by 25% by 2036, the initiative aims to improve access to affordable and inclusive healthy ageing programs. Founded by the Dance Health Alliance Australia, the programs provide opportunities for physical activity, dual-tasking, brain training, memory recall, and foster social connectivity.

Since the programs started, key results include: more than 64 facilitators have been trained, and more than 388 people aged between 41 and 100 years across 19 locations have danced. Statistical analysis of DanceMoves outcomes demonstrated significant improvements in strength, balance and function, confidence with mobility and a reduction in falls over the program. There are high satisfaction ratings, with participants reporting physical, functional, and social benefits – 100% of ‘dancers’ recommend the program to others. There is strong community demand with 460 self-referrals and successful adaptations for disability and mental health groups. There is rural workforce suitability, with staff and volunteers able to be trained and supported in program delivery.

This low-cost model shows that dance is an effective, adaptable, and engaging way to promote healthy ageing across WNSWLHD.
