Birdseye is a digital tool that helps clinicians review and improve pathology testing and ordering practices, supporting better patient outcomes and reducing environmental impacts.
Birdeye was developed by NSW Health Pathology in partnership with emergency department (ED) clinicians, Mid North Coast Local Health District, and the Agency for Clinical Innovation. The platform allows hospitals to compare pathology use with similar EDs across NSW by presenting the problem, the triage category and patient group. It is supported by educational resources, how-to guides and examples of successful local improvement projects.
Since October 2025, Birdseye has contributed to 20,859 fewer pathology encounters, avoiding $2.4 million in costs and 6.3 tonnes of carbon emissions. It has also helped reduce healthcare waste, specimen collection and laboratory processing.
