The master plan for the $558 million Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital project has been unveiled, providing the community with its first look at the vision for the contemporary health facility and future of the Albury hospital campus.

Minister Regional Health Ryan Park said the NSW and Victorian governments are progressing with planning to deliver a major new hospital redevelopment to meet the health needs of Albury, Wodonga and border communities, now and into the future.

"The master plan marks a significant milestone in the delivery of this contemporary health facility, which will transform the Albury hospital campus to expand and enhance healthcare services for the Albury Wodonga and the surrounding communities,” Mr Park said.

“It provides the framework for the redevelopment, and includes construction of a new multi-storey clinical services building, upgrades to existing infrastructure, as well as improved access in and around the hospital.

“The master plan also provides opportunities for future expansion zones to allow other infrastructure development and partnership opportunities to be explored in the future.”

Victorian Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas said the redevelopment would ensure healthcare workers and local communities on both sides of the Murray have access to the state-of-the-art health facilities they need.

“We know how important this hospital is to those living in the Albury-Wodonga region. That’s why we’re working very closely with the NSW Government to give the community new and upgraded health facilities so they can receive very best of care, now and into the future,” Ms Thomas said.

“The border region continues to grow, and this project will not only generate hundreds of job opportunities during the construction phase but will also attract more of the best healthcare professionals to the area to meet the future demand.

“While we’re planning for the future, we’re also making improvements to patient experience right now. Stage one of the new $36 million Albury Hospital Emergency Department is set to be completed early next year, with a new short-stay unit scheduled to be completed in the middle of next year.”

The project delivers a mix of new and refurbished facilities at the Albury Hospital campus, including:

  • more medical and surgical beds
  • new operating theatres
  • expansion of outpatient and specialist treatment spaces
  • a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • relocation of maternity and newborn services
  • new children’s ward
  • contemporary new adult acute mental health inpatient unit to replace Nolan House
  • additional car parking, including a multi-deck carpark
  • a new helipad

Albury Wodonga Health Chairperson, Jonathan Green welcomed the release of the master plan, which is a major milestone in the future growth of health services for the region.

“The master plan sets the foundation to deliver Albury Wodonga Health's clinical services plan, consolidating acute healthcare services on a single location to support sustainable health care facilities and services, whilst leveraging existing infrastructure to get the best possible outcome from this significant investment,” Mr Green said.

“The master plan design also delivers dedicated access points to the hospital main entrance and Emergency Department, improving traffic flow and the patient and visitor experience.

“In addition to the master plan release the Victorian Department of Health has commenced service planning for the Wodonga Hospital campus due for completion in early 2024.”

The Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital Project master plan was developed in consultation with Albury Wodonga Health staff, local councils, NSW and Victorian government agencies, clinical planning specialists and technical experts.
