Residents of Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai can now access vital chemotherapy services at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital as part of the hospital’s $265 million stage 2 redevelopment.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park toured the new six-chair chemotherapy unit today, which started treating patients in August of this year.

“We know chemotherapy can be hard for patients and their families, so I am delighted that patients will now have the option to receive treatment closer to home.” Mr Park said.

“This is a milestone for the hospital, which until now did not have the infrastructure to deliver chemotherapy to patients.

“I am so pleased to visit the new day unit, which I have no doubt will help patients navigate their cancer treatment journey under exceptional care,” Mr Park said.

Initially, the unit will offer chemotherapy treatment for breast, colon and blood cancers before expanding to offer treatments for other cancers.

The unit will operate Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 4:30pm and consists of a multidisciplinary team to provide well-rounded care to patients.

Mr Park said the new unit comes as a result of the NSW Government’s commitment to deliver new health services to the people of New South Wales.

“It is wonderful to be able to provide services like this and the new renal dialysis unit which I visited only a few months ago, to help patients receive the best possible care in NSW,” Mr Park said.

The opening of the chemotherapy unit marks the end of stage 2 of the hospital redevelopment, which includes:

  • refurbishment and expansion of psychiatric emergency care centre
  • refurbishment and expansion of the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)
  • outpatient ambulatory care services, including the provision of a day chemotherapy unit, renal dialysis unit and haemodialysis unit.
  • expansion of BreastScreen NSW
  • expansion of oral health services at Hornsby Hospital.
  • integration of community health services
  • a rooftop helipad.
