​More than 170 General Practitioners (GPs) in Western and South Western Sydney are now able to prescribe repeat ADHD scripts, as the Minns Government ensures residents in the region can access their treatment without long wait times and expensive out-of-pocket fees. 

The reforms, rolled out in September 2025, make it possible for GPs to fill repeat ADHD medication scripts to help people, especially children and young people, get more affordable and timely access to their life-changing medication. 

An ADHD masterclass held in Liverpool last month, organised and sponsored by the Minns Government, saw 60 GPs apply to issue repeat scripts, with 38 GPs practicing in the South Western and Western Sydney area.  

An extra 15 GPs from the area also enrolled in the next intake of training starting in November.

The second stage of the reforms, which trains GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD is now underway, and proving a resounding success, with 330 GPs undergoing training including 66 in western and south-western Sydney.  ​

Previously, ADHD care involved navigating a costly and overloaded non-GP specialist system, experiencing long wait times and high fees which could delay treatment, particularly for children.

These delays can impact child development, such as poorer academic progress, and later impact employment opportunities and mental health.

Applications for GPs wishing to express their interest in future training rounds as part of the second round remain open. 

Training costs will be covered by NSW Health, with a remuneration package available to those who complete the training.

GPs can also apply to become a continuation prescriber at any time.

GPs will continue to make specialist referrals, and escalate care, as required to ensure patients are receiving the treatment they need, when and where they need it.
