Construction reaches highest point for NSW’s largest mental health facility

Construction of the new $540 million Westmead Centre for Mental Health has reached its highest point, marking a major milestone in the delivery of modern mental health care in Western Sydney.

It comes as the Minns Labor Government delivers a record $3.3 billion investment in mental health services in the 2026-27 Budget, representing a 20 per cent increase in funding since FY2022-23. 

Delivery of the new 10-storey facility, the largest mental health unit in the state, is on track for completion in late 2027. The facility will include:
  • acute mental health beds for youth, adolescents, adults, older persons and people living with eating disorders 
  • mental health intensive care and high dependency units 
  • mental health assessment area   
  • sub and non-acute mental health beds 
  • multidisciplinary ambulatory and outpatient services. 
Once complete, mental health services currently located at Cumberland Hospital will relocate to the new, purpose-built facility which has been designed to be fully integrated with the broader Westmead Health Precinct and connected to Westmead Hospital.

The new unit will also provide a significant uplift in beds to help address the growing community demand in Western Sydney. 

Over the coming months, concrete pours and services installation will continue, with work progressing across the site. The installation of a new link bridge will connect staff and visitors to Westmead Hospital’s main building and better integrate mental health care and general health care services and facilities, including the Emergency Department. 

The project is supporting hundreds of construction jobs, with approximately 440 workers currently on site each day, and is expected to increase to 500 during peak construction.

The Minns Labor Government is delivering modern mental health facilities for New South Wales with new units recently completed in Penrith, Tamworth, and Broken Hill.
