Eight new cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in NSW in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, bringing the total number of cases to 3,211 – all new cases were in returned travellers now in hotel quarantine.

NSW Health has today announced tracing is underway following notification of a confirmed COVID-19 case who has returned to NSW after mandatory quarantine in Melbourne. 

The man travelled to Sydney by plane from Melbourne on June 26, on Jetstar Flight JQ 510, and subsequently spent time working in Balmain. 

NSW is following up all close contacts from the flight and his work colleagues. A total of 18,347 tests were notified in the reporting period, compared with 16,243 tests in the previous 24 hours. NSW has carried out more than 870,000 COVID-19 tests.

There are 68 COVID-19 cases being treated by NSW Health, with one in intensive care. They do not require a ventilator. In NSW, 2,787 people are known to have recovered from COVID-19.

Since 29 March 2020, 3,558 symptomatic returned travellers have been tested in hotels, with 112 of those (3 per cent) found positive. Since day 10 screenings of quarantined travellers began on 15 May 2020, 13,296 have been screened with 78 found positive.

From this week travellers in hotel quarantine will also be offered testing within 2 days of arrival to help understand whether they may be carrying the infection earlier. 

Anyone feeling unwell - even with the mildest of symptoms such as a runny nose or scratchy throat – is urged to self-isolate and seek testing. ​ A full list of COVID-19 testing clinics is available at COVID-19 Clinics or people can visit their GP. ​

It is essential people follow directions they receive about home isolation and quarantine and maintain COVID-safe practices of physical distancing of 1.5 metres and regularly wash their hands.
