Paediatric Pathways in Practice (PaedPiP)

Paediatric Pathways in Practice is a professional development initiative that helps nurses build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to provide safe, evidence-based care to infants, children, and young people across NSW Health settings.

Paediatric Pathways in Practice brochure

PaedPiP supports the implementation of the NSW Health Paediatric Nursing Education and Training Framework.

The Framework outlines the capabilities and clinical competencies required for safe and effective paediatric nursing practice. Developed with HETI and paediatric nurses across NSW, PaedPiP translates the Framework into practical learning and development opportunities that support nurses throughout their careers, particularly those working outside specialist paediatric services.

Purpose

PaedPiP provides a structured professional development pathway that strengthens paediatric nursing capability across NSW Health and helps nurses deliver consistent and safe care for children and young people.

PaedPiP supports nurses to:

  • build core paediatric knowledge and clinical skills
  • access learning and scholarship opportunities
  • apply evidence-based learning in the workplace.

Who benefits from PaedPiP?

PaedPiP is suitable for nurses working in a wide range of settings, whether in dedicated paediatric services or in roles that include caring for children and young people.

PaedPiP is designed for:

  • nurses working in paediatric and mixed clinical settings
  • nurses seeking to build confidence and capability in paediatric care
  • health services seeking to strengthen paediatric workforce capability.

Your PaedPiP development pathway

The Fundamentals of Paediatric Nursing Program supports nurses to develop foundational knowledge and skills for caring for infants, children and young people. The program combines self-directed online learning, work-integrated learning activities and a clinical capability assessment.

Learning is delivered through nine modules covering core areas of paediatric nursing practice, including assessment, mental health, common clinical conditions, surgical care and recognising and responding to deterioration.

Postgraduate study opportunities

For nurses ready to build on their foundational knowledge, postgraduate study provides an opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills, strengthen specialist practice and explore new career pathways. Through NSW Nursing and Midwifery Postgraduate Scholarships and HETI Contracted Postgraduate Courses, nurses can access financial and educational support to undertake university study relevant to paediatric nursing practice.
