Current situation
Since May 2022, there has been a global increase in mpox cases. NSW experienced a large mpox outbreak in 2024. Sexually active people are still at risk of mpox both in NSW and overseas, particularly men who have sex with men, sex workers, and sexual partners of both of these groups.
Since January 2023, there has been an outbreak of a more severe strain of mpox in some countries in central and eastern Africa.
