Digital Alerts for Recognising and Treating Sepsis (DARTS) in Children

The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network

Finalist: Patient Safety First Award

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) created and implemented a Sepsis Digital Alert system in their Emergency Departments (EDs) to help manage and diagnose sepsis in children.

This tool works with the electronic medical record to identify patients at risk using clinical triggers, prompting urgent senior review and timely antibiotic administration within one hour of suspicion. Since its introduction in May 2022, the alert system has improved early recognition and management of sepsis, removing serious adverse events related to sepsis in SCHN’s EDs over 2 years.
