Finalist: Environmental Sustainability Award

Contrast-enhanced CT scans use a special dye to improve visibility of blood vessels and soft tissues. Single-use contrast injector systems have led to high plastic waste, emissions, and costs. Medical imaging services identified an opportunity to reduce environmental impact and improve efficiency by fitting existing systems with a simple, low-cost multi-use system.

A three-month pilot was done at Bathurst Hospital, replacing single-use injectors with a multi-use system. Baseline data on waste, clinician set-up time, and consumables cost was compared to data from after the pilot.

This data showed a 79% reduction in plastic waste and carbon emissions, a 69% reduction in equipment set-up time and a 40% reduction in consumable costs, with further savings from reduced waste. Radiographers reported increased efficiency, with 1–2 additional scans per day and reduced patient wait times.

The pilot offers a practical, scalable solution for regional and smaller imaging sites, delivering environmental, financial, and clinical benefits.
