Shift Workers Wellbeing Guide

NSW Ambulance

Finalist: People and Culture Award

The Shift Worker Wellbeing Guide supports NSW Ambulance staff in managing the unique health challenges of shift work—disrupted sleep, poor nutrition, high stress, and irregular physical activity. The aim was to create a practical, evidence-based resource to help staff improve their wellbeing.

The guide was developed using feedback and information taken from staff during Wellbeing Workshops, surveys and talks with health coaches and injury prevention specialists. Insights were taken from paramedics, call takers, and health professionals across regional and metropolitan areas. A multidisciplinary team collaborated to create a guide focused on circadian rhythm, sleep, nutrition, mental wellbeing, and physical activity. Practical tips, a sample 9-day roster, and customisable tools helped to make it relevant and usable.

Feedback showed 80% of staff felt more supported in their wellbeing, while 85% made or intended to make lifestyle changes.  Results showed better sleep routines, healthier eating habits, increased physical activity, and improved mental wellbeing.

The guide has driven a cultural shift towards proactive self-care at NSW Ambulance and sparked national and international interest. It is now a model for improving shift worker health across the emergency services sector.
